BARCELONA BEATS RECORD SEIZING CANS OF BEER

POLICE INTENSIFY PATROLS

Since 2007, a total of 3,250,667 cans have been seized according to nightlife organisation FECASARM

The nightlife organisation FECASARM reported action taken by Barcelona’s “Guardia Urbana”, together with public awareness, has allowed a significant decline in illegal street selling of cans in Barcelona city centre. Stated by the general secretary of the federation, Joaquim Boadas, from data collected over the last nine years regarding confiscating cans, especially beer, which was provided to FECASARM by local Police.

According to the data, between October 2007 and October of this year, the Urban Guard has seized a total of 3,250,667 cans.

Drinking from the pool is ill-advised

In the first nine months of 2016 alone, they intercepted over 440K cans, which, in the absence of last quarter’s results, already exceed the figures for every year since 2008.

After the civic campaign “Maximun Fun, Minimun Distrubance” executed during past “Mercè” celebrations, FECASARM found presence of “lateros” (illegal vendors) on Barcelona streets had reduced considerably. The nightlife organisation said, according to data collected during the development of the campaign, which was carried out in collaboration with the City Council, the number of cans sold on the streets had decreased 80% compared to 2008 and losses to the sector had gone down from €2M to €400K.

Recent control of can storage and distribution points has intensified. An attack to the root of the problem has helped prevent thousands of drinks being sold on the streets. However, FECASARM insists on raising public awareness campaigns and, in general, not letting down the guard.
