Madrid Municipal Police carried out controls in 12 areas around the city during the nights of Friday 8th and Saturday 9th August.

53 Positive for Alcohol and 8 for Drugs!

The Most Detected Drug was Cannabis!

Drivers who tested positive for drugs received a fixed penalty of €1000 [£800] in addition to six points on their driving license.

The Traffic Unit reported 53 positive for alcohol and 8 positive for drugs at the 12 controls installed by Municipal Police, in different parts of the city, on the nights of Friday and Saturday. All reports were breaches of the Road Traffic Law, Vehicle and Traffic Safety for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

The Municipal Police began last weekend these controls on drug use in order to improve road safety, and is in addition to those already made periodically using a breathalyzer.

As some drivers could see, the test procedure is simple. The person who is requested to pass the control impregnates with saliva a small sponge which, when inserted in a reader, reacts upon contact with an organic solvent housed in the device. After a few minutes, the test reveals whether the person has consumed any drugs through markers that appear in the reading area.

This circumstantial evidence for detection of narcotics, psychotropic substances and other toxic substances can detect cocaine, amphetamine, cannabis, methamphetamine, opiates and ketamine taken hours before the test. If the result is positive, a second saliva collection is sent to the lab sealed where the corresponding contrast analysis is performed.

Drug positives in the last weekend, most were for cannabis, being in some cases one of multiple drugs.

Drivers who tested positive at the drug control received a fine of one thousand euros and have six points on their license.
