MMDDMM - Madrid Me Mola by Tommy Toro

O.K. I know what you´re thinking. But before you finish your thought, Tommy El Toro wishes to apologise for the lateness in posting on our latest outing. Due to unforseen circumstances, that is HOLIDAYS, Tommy could not find the time in his beer soaked diary to fill you in on what went on. But hey, he´s back, and raging to go.

Another sweltering August Tuesday had rolled around so it was that the gang of gorgers known as MMDDMM set out on another exploration of Madrid´s dining domain. Our gracious hosts, Loreto Cafe Bar on Calle Corredera Baja de San Pablo 6. A newbie to the gourmet game, Loreto is part of the new & hip crowd quickly gathering on the north end of callao & Plaza de la Luna and slowly spreading the all encompassing grip of, and I AM speaking for everybody, Madrid´s toppest barrio, Malasaña. Loreto follows the latest trend of jumbled up but complimenting furniture accompanied with a minimal but comfortable decor. Nothing new in this day and age but still, well thought out.

On offer this week, starters & mains of 4 and 4 with the usual postre o cafe, all priced at a not too shaby €11.00. Our selection included the summertime favourites of Gazpacho and salad (the cold variety that somehow always includes tuna and tomatoes) along with hearty stomach fillers like pasta, burgers, oven roasted fish and some others I did not get to partake in. Although our usual tipple of red grape juice and fizzy water was available, some of the gang went Han Solo. And the force was with them. The desserts encompassed the sweet & sweeter and were happily tested. What would we be if we didn´t give you the full menu experience?

So how did Loreto fair? Fairly well !! The service was at a minimal but acceptable level. We did tell our server we were waiting for 1 or 2 stragglers so he was slow to start but the pace was soon picked up. MMDDMM Tip Of The Week No. 1 - while your clients maybe waiting on others, have the menus on the table so service can quickly resume. Our stomach swellers did as advertised. Our first dishes were a bit slow to come out, with surprisingly the hot dishes first!!, but when all was said and done, a complaint was hardly heard. The burger was, in reality, a beef pate minus the buns. In the local lingo, this is called filete ruso. MMDDMM Tip Of The Week No. 2 - call it what it is. no need to dress it all up. Despite this linguistic slip up, it was actually yummy yummy, a fact verified by the sausage AND burger king of Madrid, Bren Murphy. Every dish was well dressed with fresh salad and proper home cooked taters. The desserts continued the quality theme. While the chocolate cake was more like a brownie, it hit the post meal happy spot. And the coffee was a step above the usual hot and burnt mixture.

Loreto is a baby to the scene, but it looks like this baby is gonna do real well. While we could not give it a perfect tick in every box, its got a lot of the basics covered. Grub, B+, service, C -, ambience B+. 3.25 out of 5 is the judges final decision. The bare minimum of tweeks and I feel these guys will be on it like a car bonnet. And I´d like to point out that the free post meal shots and lack of extras on the bill despite the multitude who enjoyed coffe AND dessert did not influence our decision. We are totally above corruption.

Our next adventure, tomorrow, takes us to the north west end of our favourite barrio and to La Roja on Calle santa cruz de marcenado. With a menu priced at €8.95, on the terrace!!, and all types of beverages, alcoholic & pointless included, at ridiculously low prices, this is one you really should not miss. But if yo do, WE KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE. Until mañana MMDDMMers.
