1. GRAZIE MILLE

Calle Mayor, 31: GRAZIE MILLE

Grazie Mille is located in the middle of "Calle Mayor".  This venue serves as a meeting place for Madrid's resident Italian community, and in turn, is the right place to enjoy their delicacies.  They offer Milanese aperitif, Aperol Spritz drinks and what I like the most: Cappuccinos and "cornetto riempito" with Nutella (croissant stuffed with chocolate). If you love Italian cuisine and don't want to break the bank, you have a Grazie Mille daily menu every day for less than €10 and is a quite tasty and filling menu.  Breakfast is served Monday to Friday from 10 am until 12 Noon and you can choose between various types of coffee and pastries or toast to accompany them. We would like to highlight their cappuccino, prepared with great care and attention, and the result is an amazing coffee with froth. Their cappuccino is good and they also always put the final touch for the client by making a drawing with caramel or chocolate on top.

Ferpal is a well established family business that opened in 1971 and is dedicated to the sale fine meats. Fantastic location on "Arenal" street a few meters from Sol has made it one of those places where tourists and natives come together at any time of the day. Although their sausages are good, their sandwiches are definitely worth trying for only €1 each and you have a variety: tuna and tomato, cheese and nuts, mixing salami, spicy sausage, leek and ham, turkey and tomato...  Inside Ferpal there is a small cafe where you can eat breakfast, have a beer or just grab a mid-morning sandwich. Breakfast is not very expensive, coffee from €1.30 and 95 cents sandwich, although not an extensive breakfast selection.  They also have soya milk, skimmed, lactose free for no extra charge.

“It was a pleasant cafe, warm and clean and friendly, and I hung up my old water-proof on the coat rack to dry and put my worn and weathered felt hat on the rack above the bench and ordered a cafe au lait. The waiter brought it and I took out a notebook from the pocket of the coat and a pencil and started to write.” - Ernest Hemingway

What if you want something sweet? We can recommend with coffee one of their delicious cakes or croissants for €1.40. They are crispy and crumble as you bite.

“Making coffee has become the great compromise of the decade. It’s the only thing “real” men do that doesn't seem to threaten their masculinity. To women, it’s on the same domestic entry level as putting the spring back into the toilet-tissue holder or taking a chicken out of the freezer to thaw.” - Erma Bombeck

Coffees from €1,30.  This neighbourhood needed a local cafe like this where you can have breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, and even a drink with friends, learn English and enjoy a relaxed evening.  From this venue you can't leave without trying their exceptional carrot or chocolate cake with caramel €4,50 (£3.60), or one of their lemonades €3,50 (£2.80) or a fruit juice €4 (£3.20).
